Why is titanium an ideal material for ship engineering?

The outstanding performance of titanium in marine environments has earned engineers the term "marine metal" for it. Other metals, such as steel and copper, are prone to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and microbial corrosion, while titanium has unique resistance to saltwater and marine atmospheric corrosion.

Another major advantage of titanium is its extremely high strength-to-weight ratio, which is an extremely valuable characteristic in marine and offshore engineering fields. Its tensile strength is roughly equivalent to that of steel, but its weight is 45% lighter.Compared to aluminum, titanium is 60% heavier in weight, but its strength is twice that of aluminum.

From an economic perspective, compared to many steel or nickel alloys, titanium is relatively inexpensive. Besides the initial investment, the durability of titanium also leads to long-term cost savings, as it has a longer lifespan and requires less maintenance and repair.
