How to solve the problem of vibration caused by the drill bit in the processing of 304 stainless steel hollow balls?

2026-03-11 - Leave me a message

Firstly, we need to understand the true reasons behind the 304 hollow-core shock knife. There are mainly three reasons:

1. 304 is sticky, brittle and has high cutting resistance.

2. Hollow with thin walls → poor rigidity, and it shakes immediately upon being subjected to force.

3. Spherical arc cutting → unstable force application.

When these three factors are combined, it will inevitably cause vibration of the tool, formation of vibration marks, and loss of roundness.

The most effective and quickest solution are:

1. Cutting Tools (Most Critical)

  • The blade material is for stainless steel:

Material: Superfine-grained carbide

Coating: AlTiN or TiSiN

  • The smaller the tip angle, the less vibration:

Recommended: r0.2 ~ r0.4

  • The blade must be sharp; the duller it is, the more vibration and the more prone to sticking.

2. Cutting Parameters

For hollow balls, the feed rate should be reduced, the cutting depth should be shallow, and the feed should be stable.

  • Speed: 30% - 50% lower than that of solid balls
  • Feed: f = 0.05 - 0.10 mm/r
  • Finishing cut depth: ap ≤ 0.1 mm

3. Fixture (Determining whether there will be vibration)

The ordinary three-jaw clamping method causes deformation and vibration. Switch to:

  • Internal expansion fixture (Stops the ball from moving outward, the most stable)
  • Soft jaws / Copper sleeves, increasing the clamping area
  • Vacuum suction cups / Low-pressure magnetic plates

Key point: Make the ball body more rigid, preventing it from floating or being subjected to single-point force

4. Tool Rod and Extension Length

  • The thicker and shorter the tool rod, the better
  • The extension length should be as short as possible
  • The tip height should be slightly higher than the center by 0.1 to 0.2 mm for better stability

5. Cooling (304 must have)

  • Use lubricating cutting fluid or high-concentration emulsion
  • Fully cut through the cutting area

Function: Anti-sticking of the tool, cooling, reducing friction → Directly reducing vibration
