As we all known, machines used for CNC milling are called CNC milling machines, and those used for CNC turning are called CNC lathes. However, the types of CNC machine tools are more about the axes that they can move and rotate. The following are several commonly used types in parts manufacturing:
2-axis CNC machine tools: They can only process parts on the X-axis and Z-axis (i.e., vertical and horizontal), and are the simplest CNC machine tools used in part manufacturing.
3-axis CNC machine tools: 3-axis CNC machine tools go a step further than 2-axis CNC machine tools. They can move along the x, y, and z axes and are the most commonly used machines in CNC machining. However, due to the lack of rotation, the ability to process parts with complex designs may be limited.
4-axis CNC machine tool: The spindle of a 4-axis CNC machine tool can move along three axes. Simply speaking, the machine can rotate up and down, left and right, front and back, as well as along the X-axis and the A-axis. However, all of this occurred without the workpiece moving. Due to its speed, precision and accuracy, 4-axis machine tools are the most commonly used CNC machine tools when processing complex parts.
5-axis CNC machine tool: A 5-axis CNC machine tool has a spindle and a tool, and can move like a 4-axis machine tool. However, unlike 4-axis machines, they can rotate along any two of the three axes. They are regarded as the most complete multi-axis CNC machines because they can approach the workpiece from all directions without the need for manual repositioning during the processing. 5-axis CNC machining enables precise and complex parts to operate perfectly.
